Johnson & Johnson Settles Risperdal Gynecomastia Lawsuits

On October 2012 Johnson & Johnson agreed to five Risperdal gynecomastia settlements, media reports say. A report from the Philadelphia Inquirer showed that the company may have been provoked to settle so as to avoid having former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner David Kessler called to the stand as a witness. Kessler wrote in a report submitted as proof in one forthcoming trial that Janssen endorsed Risperdal for non-approved uses in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

An example of this is the case of 21-year-old Aron Banks, who has been suffering psycho-socially trauma due to his condition called gynecomastia, and who filed a lawsuit against Risperdal in Pennsylvania. On the first day of the trial, Mr. Banks and Johnson & Johnson decided to a settlement. Although a Risperdal gynecomastiasettlement has been granted, the terms of the settlement had been held confidential.

The man has been taking the drug known as Risperdal for five years. Risperdal is an anti-psychotic drug that treats schizophrenia, acute bipolar, and autism. It comes with side effects such as weight gain that include gynecomastia, photosensitivity, muscle stiffness, and even pain.

What is Gynecomastia and Its Association to Risperdal?

Gynecomastia is an acute enlargement of breast tissues in males. Some males during puberty period may have breast development. It is greatly influenced by the imbalance between the actions of estrogen and androgen since body growth is more profound in those time.

In relation to gynecomastia, Risperdal may significantly increases prolactin which is a hormone responsible for breast growth and milk production. Professionals should be cautious about and hold liability to provide such information for patients taking it and to their next of kin.

According to Food and Drug Association (FDA) in 2007, children ages 13 to 17 with schizophrenia are allowed to take Risperdal. Not only that, Risperdal is also indicated to children ages 10 to 17 with bipolar disorder or exhibiting manic and autistic behaviors.

It is strongly prohibited for elders with schizophrenia who suffer dementia because it has an increase mortality rate. Therefore, before the drug is being purchased, it is mandatory for any distributor to have a drug label that would imply health warnings.

The lawsuit alleged that Johnson & Johnson did not clarify nor state the adverse effects of having gynecomastia. If so, it should have had become clear to Aron Banks who had been traumatized over the crucial growing years of his life, he would not have to experience those if he has been informed or made aware of that matter. Based on reports, there are around 130 lawsuits alleging Risperdal caused gynecomastia and waiting to recover monetary settlement for the pain, hospital bills, and injuries that they have experienced.
